Continue on Unpaved Road

This picture pretty much sums up our adventure with the Schills to the beach and the Osa Peninsula along the Pacific Coast this past week.


Wednesday: Left around 6:30am and drove through San José and some windy mountain roads. Spent about an hour in the Valley of the Quetzals, but they are hard to see, especially after the morning hours. It had a beautiful stream and many lovely gardens. Later we arrived in Dominical, a little surf town with unpaved roads where we went to the beach and spent the night.







Thursday: Drove to Las Ventanas (the windows) which are some caves on the beach. Bryce and Darla took a liking to all the fallen coconuts. They each picked one to take home. Later we went out on the Osa Peninsula to Puerto Jiménez and all boarded a little boat "for a three hour tour, a three hour tour". We explored the Gulf there called Golfo Dulce until we found dolphins to play with. They are so fun to watch (unless you are experiencing sharp pains in your bowels). Some dolphins even did some flips and other tricks for us. Brinnan and Steve both took a turn holding a line behind the boat trying to see the dolphins with goggles on, but it was hard to see in the water. They could hear them talking, though. We all got a scare when we saw a poisonous sea snake (bright yellow) right near Brinnan. Everyone took at least one turn in the water, which was a great temperature. It was a great, but very tiring day. Later Scott fell asleep while we were waiting for our dinner, and Bryce fell asleep on the floor next to our table right after he ate.





Friday: The kids swam in the pool for a couple hours, even while it was pouring rain. We left for another part of the peninsula called Bahia Drake. It was a crazy unpaved ride! There were many river crossings, some with "bridges" and some without. George usually got out to check where would be the shallowest, best place to drive through the water. The scariest was on the way back when the water level went up so we had to cross the bridge made from two large tree trunks, and one of them was very narrow at one point. We only got to stay at Bahia Drake for a couple of hours, so we didn't have time to walk over to the good beach that the locals told us about.





Saturday: We ended up staying in this awesome hotel where we saw monkeys swinging through the trees in the morning. The kids also loved playing in the pool which had a sloping shallow end, so even Lyndy could walk around and play on her own. The hotel also had a pretty nice view of the ocean. We liked it so much that we decided to reserve a few rooms for one night when Grandma Debbie and the Kellers come to visit us next week. We had a relatively nice drive home with no problems. It was a fun adventure!
